1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Instant Messenger -> Pidgin.
2. On the "Accounts" screen, click the "Add" button.
3. On the window named "Add Account", select the "Protocol" pull-down menu, and select XMPP.
4. On the window named "Add Account":
a) For "Screen Name", type your DIVMS user name
b) For "Domain", type jabber.divms.uiowa.edu
c) For "Resource", type divms
When you are finished, it should resemble the picture below:
NOTE: CSG strongly recommends that you do NOT select the "Remember password" option. The Pidgin client stores passwords as plain text.
d) Click the "Save" button
5. You will be prompted to enter your password. Make sure the "Save password" box is unchecked.
Type your password and click OK.
6. Click "Buddies" menu, then select "Add Buddy".
7. On the "Add Buddy" screen:
a) For "Screen name", type the DIVMS username of the person you would like to add, followed by "@jabber.divms.uiowa.edu"
b) For "Alias", type whatever you would like to be diplayed when your buddy contacts you. (You may leave it blank if you wish, in which case the "Screen name" will be displayed".
8. When you are done using Pidgin, make sure you select the "Buddies" menu, and choose "Quit", or press CTRL-Q. If you exit any other way, the client continues running in the background.
