MacOS X gives you the ability to limit it's power usage when you are not present and using the machine. In this way you can contribute to the UI Initiative to limit power usage on campus.
The first thing to do is to open up your "System Preferences" by clicking it on your Dock, or, in your Applications folder. Once that is open, choose "Energy Saver" which will have a lightbulb icon. You should see something like this:
In the above section under "Sleep" you have the ability to set the machines basic power savings. If you wish your machine to go to sleep after a period of inactivity (This means the machine will behave as if it were turned off.) set the apropriate time on the slider labeled "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:". The second slider; "Put the display(s) to sleep when the computer is inactive for:" can, and should be set the the lowest tolerable setting.
Selecting the "Options" tab near the top will present you with something like this:
The most important setting is the first "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access". This will allow you to use tools specified by CSG to wake your computer remotely so that you can login to it. Please ensure that this is checked.
If you wish to have your machine sleep and wakup on a schedule that matches your own, you may click the "Schedule" tab and set that schedule accordingl. See below:
To access your local files when your Mac is sleeping (via SSH), or to wake it remotely for other purposes, you'll need to ssh to linux.divms.uiowa and then run "/usr/divms/bin/wakelan 00:16:C B:CB:15:D8". Substitute your Mac's own MAC address instead of the one shown in the example. This assumes your Mac is located in MLH. If you're in SH, you'll need to run the wakelan command from l-lnx205.divms.uiowa.edu.
