Connecting to Network Printers from Campus Wireless

Please note:

These instructions will work if you are connected to the campus wireless network

We'll be using p325 a LaserJet 4250 in the 325 MLH cluster for our example. Instructions are based on Mac OS X version 10.4.10 (a list of dept printers is here)

  1. Open Printer Setup Utility, located on the system drive, in the Applications/Utilities folder. NOTE Under Leopard (10.5) this is located in the System Preferences located on The Dock. The name of the preference is Print and Fax.
  2. Click the "Add" or + button.
  3. Click the "IP Printer" button

  4. Change:
    • Protocol from "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" to "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP"
    • Address to "cups.divms.uiowa.edu:631"
    • Queue to "/printers/p325" (substituting the printer name for p325 if adding a different printer)
    • Name to "p325" (or the name of the printer you are adding)
    • Location to the room number of the printer or leave it blank
    • Print Using: DO NOT select "Generic PostScript Printer". Consult the table below and select the driver that matches the printer you wish to print to.

  5. In the URL field, enter the URL of the printer you'd like to use as specified in the following table:

  6. Click "Add"

To duplex print, select "Layout" in the print window and select "Long-edged binding" next to the "Two_Sided:" dialog box.
