Checking Folders for New Messages

Note: Please configure folders to check for new messages only if you have a server-side filter that moves new messages into the folder, or if the folder is shared.

• Note: In Alpine, configuring folders to be checked for new mail is a two-step process:
• Configure Alpine to Check for New Mail in Multiple Folders
  • In the main menu, press S.
  • In the Setup menu, press C.
  • In the Configuration menu, scroll down to the "Folder Preferences" section.
  • Scroll down to "Enable Incoming Folders Collection" and press X to check the check box.
  • Scroll down to "Enable Incoming Folders Checking" and press X to check the check box.
  • Press E, then Y to save changes.
  • Press Q and quit Alpine.
• Mark Folders to Check for New Mail
  • Start Alpine again.
  • In the main menu, press L.
  • Highlight "Incoming Folders" and press Enter.
  • For each folder you want to check for new messages:
  • Press A.
  • Press Ctrl-X and then Enter.
  • Enter the name of the folder you want to check.
  • Enter a nickname for the folder.
  • When you are done, press M to go to the main menu.

Checking Quota

There is no facility inside Alpine to check quota. Instead, login to the Mathematical Sciences Mail Utilities and select "Check quota".

Configuration

Creating Filters

Note: If you have configured server-side filters and are using IMAP to read your email, you do not need to configure filters in the email client.

• In Alpine, at the "MAIN MENU", type 's', for "SETUP".
• In the "SETUP" menu, type 'r', for "Rules".
• At the "Type of rule setup :" prompt, type 'f', for "Filter".
• In the "SETUP FILTERING RULES", type 'a', for "Add".
• In "ADD A FILTERING RULE", press Enter.
• Backspace over "Filter Rule", and then type in the name you want to give your rule, and press Enter.
• Press the down-arrow key until the header you want to filter on is highlighted.
• Press Enter.
• Type in the string you wish to filter on and press Enter.
• Press the down-arrow key, so that the highlight moves down past "ACTIONS BEGIN HERE", into the "Filter Action" area, until the action you want the rule to do is highlighted.
• Press Enter.
• If you've chosen the "Move" action, type the name of the folder that you want spam moved to, and then press Enter.
• Type 'e' to exit "ADD A FILTERING RULE".
• Type 'y' to save your changes.
• In "SETUP FILTERING RULES", type 'e' to exit.
• Type 'y' to commit your changes.

• Press the down-arrow key, so that the highlight moves down past "ACTIONS BEGIN HERE", into the "Filter Action" area, until "Folder List" is highlighted, under "Move".
• Press Enter.
• Type the name of the folder that you want spam moved to, and then press Enter.
• Type 'e' to exit "ADD A FILTERING RULE".
• Type 'y' to save your changes.
• In "SETUP FILTERING RULES", type 'e' to exit.
• Type 'y' to commit your changes.

Subscribing to Folders

All your folders should automatically appear in Alpine; you don't need to subscribe to them.

Subscribing to Shared Folders

All shared folders that you have access to should automatically appear in Alpine.
