Checking Quota
NOTE: Using Apple Mail to check your quota can take a long time, especially over a slow network connection, such as a dial-up connection. If you are using Apple Mail on a slow connection, you may want use the Mathematical Sciences Mail Utilities instead. To use the Mathematical Sciences Mail Utilities, login http://mail.divms.uiowa.edu/ and select "Check quota".

Click on the scroll icon in the top menu.
Click on "Get Size of IMAP Mailboxes".
In the "Choose an account" window, click on your Mathematical Sciences
account and then click on the "OK" button.
Another window will pop up, informing that the account first must be
synchronized with the server. Click on the "OK" button.
Yet another window will pop up, warning you that the operation will take
some time, and giving you the option to cancel. If you want to proceed, click
on the "OK" button.
After some time, a "Quota report" message will pop up, listing your
mailboxes and their sizes. You can mail the report--it's actually a message.
Configuration
Creating Filters
Note: If you have configured server-side filters and are using IMAP to read your email, you do not need to configure filters in the email client.

Click on "Mail" in the menu bar.
In the "Mail" menu, click on "Preferences...".
In the window that pops up, click on the "Rules" icon.
Click on the "Add Rule" button.
In the box to the right of "Description:", enter a name for the rule.
Click on the pull-down box labeled "From" and click on the appropriate
header.
Click on the pull-down box labeled "Contains" and click on the
specification you want.
In the next box to the right, enter the string that you want the filter
to look for.
Under "Perform the following actions:", choose the action you want.
If you choose the "Move" action, pull down the "No mailbox selected" menu
and click on the mailbox you want your spam to be moved to.
Click on the "OK" button.
Close the preferences window.
Marking Messages as Read

Select the messages you want to mark as read.
In the menu bar, click on "Message".
In the "Message" menu, click on "Mark".
In the submenu, click on "As Read".
Reducing Disk Usage

In the menu across the top of the display, select "Mailbox."
In the pull-down menu, select "Erase Deleted Messages".
In the side menu, select your Mathematical Sciences account.
Spam Filtering

Click on "Mail" in the menu bar.
In the "Mail" menu, click on "Preferences...".
In the window that pops up, click on the "Rules" icon.
Click on the "Add Rule" button.
In the box to the right of "Description:", enter a name for the rule.
Click on the pull-down box labeled "From" and click on "Subject".
Click on the pull-down box labeled "Contains" and click on "Begins with".
In the next box to the right, enter "[SPAM?]-".
Under "Perform the following actions:", make sure the leftmost box says
"Move Messages".
Pull down the "No mailbox selected" menu and click on the mailbox you
want your spam to be moved to.
Click on the "OK" button.
Close the preferences window.
Subscribing to Folders
All your folders should automatically appear in Apple Mail; you don't need to subscribe to them.
Subscribing to Shared Folders

There should be a folder named "Other Users" in your "Mailboxes" window along the left side of your Apple Mail window. If you do not see "Other Users", you may need to resynchronize your mailboxes.
Click on the "Other Users" folder. The shared folders that you have access to should now appear underneath "Other Users".
