Note: Please configure folders to check for new messages only if you have a server-side filter that moves new messages into the folder, or if the folder is shared.
Alpine

Note: In Alpine, configuring folders to be checked for new mail is
a two-step process:
Configure Alpine to Check for New Mail in Multiple Folders

In the main menu, press S.
In the Setup menu, press C.
In the Configuration menu, scroll down to the "Folder Preferences"
section.
Scroll down to "Enable Incoming Folders Collection" and press X to check
the check box.
Scroll down to "Enable Incoming Folders Checking" and press X to check
the check box.
Press E, then Y to save changes.
Press Q and quit Alpine.

Start Alpine again.
In the main menu, press L.
Highlight "Incoming Folders" and press Enter.
For each folder you want to check for new messages:
Press A.
Press Ctrl-X and then Enter.
Enter the name of the folder you want to check.
Enter a nickname for the folder.
When you are done, press M to go to the main menu.
Outlook
Apparently, by default, Microsoft Outlook will check all subscribed folders for new messages.

Thunderbird

Right-click on the folder.
Click on "Properties."
In the "Folder Properties" window, check the box by "Check this folder for new messages".
Click the button labeled "OK".
Note: On start-up, Thunderbird apparently checks only the Inbox.
To check all the other folders, click on "Get Mail" and select your
Mathematical Sciences account.
Webmail

In the icon menu atop the Webmail page, click on "Folders".
Click on the check box beside each folder you want to check for new mail.
Pull down the "Choose Action" menu and select "Check Folder(s) for New
Mail".
