Checking Folders for New Messages
Apparently, by default, Microsoft Outlook will check all subscribed folders for new messages.

WARNING: To accurately calculate your mail disk usage, you must first
be sure that Outlook's folder information is current. The only way to do this
is to click on each folder in the Navigation Pane.
Right-click on the root of your folder tree.
In the menu, click on Properties.
Click on the Folder Size button.
Your total disk usage will be displayed above the Subfolder window. Each
subfolder's size will be displayed in the scrollable Subfolder window.
Click the "Close" button.
Click the OK button.

Creating Filters
Note: If you have configured server-side filters and are using IMAP to read your email, you do not need to configure filters in the email client.

Click on "Tools" in the menu bar.
In the menu, select "Rules and Alerts..."
In the "Rules and Alerts" window, click on the "New Rule..." button.
In the "Rules Wizard" window, click on "Start from a blank rule".
Follow the steps in the wizard to create your rule.
Click on the "Finish" button.

In the menu, select "Rules and Alerts..."
In the "Rules and Alerts" window, click on the "New Rule..." button.

In the "Step 1: Select when messages should be checked" area, click on
"Check messages when they arrive".
Click on the "Next >" button.
In the "Step 1: Select condition(s)" box, check the box by "with specific
words in the subject".
In the "Step 2: Edit the rule description (click on an underlined value)"
box, click on "specific words".
In the "Search Text" window, in the box under "Specify words or phrases
to search for in the subject:", type "[SPAM?]-".
Click on the "Add" button.
Click on the "OK" button.

In the area under "Step 1: Select action(s)", check the box by "move it
to the specified folder".
In the "Step 2: Edit the description (click an underlined value)" area,
click on "specified".
In the "Choose a folder:" area, click on the folder you want to move
spam to.
Click on the "OK" button.
Click on the "Next >" button.
Click on the "Next >" button again.
Under "Step 1: Specify a name for this rule", give your rule a name.
Under "Step 2: Setup rule options", make sure that the "Turn on this
rule" box is checked.
Click on the "Finish" button.

Subscribing to Folders

Click on "Tools" in the menu bar.
Click on "IMAP Folders..."
Click on the "Query" button.
Click on the tab marked "All" in the "Folder" box.
Select the folders you want to subscribe to.
Click on the "Subscribe" button.
Click on the "OK" button.
