Connecting to your network attached file space from Windows XP

Connecting to your Unix space from Windows XP

Prerequisites:

 

Instructions:

  1. Right-click "My Computer" and select "Map Network Drive..." from the menu.



     
  2. In the "Map Network Drive" dialog, enter the following two sets of information depending on which files you would like to access
     
    "Drive:"* "Folder:" Files In Specified Folder

    H:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\<username>
    (replace <username> with your Mathematical Sciences username; this is only valid for faculty and staff)    		 Allows access to all the files in your Unix home directory.  Permissions on new files and directories are set securely so that other users cannot access them.

    H:

    		 \\netapp2.divms.uiowa.edu\<username>
    (replace <username> with your Mathematical Sciences username; this is only valid for students)    		 Allows access to all the files in your Unix home directory.  Permissions on new files and directories are set securely so that other users cannot access them.

    M:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\class
    		Allows access to files in the Class Project directories /group/class.

    N:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\ftp
    		Allows access to files in the anonymous FTP directory /group/ftp/pub.

    I:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\incoming
    		Allows access to files in the anonymous FTP Incoming directory /group/ftp.incoming.

    X:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\cssec
    		Allows access to files in the CS Staff directory /group/cs_sec. *Restricted share.

    X:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\mathstaff
    		Allows access to files in the Math Staff directory /group/math_staff. *Restricted share.

    X:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\statsec
    		Allows access to files in the Stat Staff directory /group/stat_sec. *Restricted share.

    X:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\actsciapp
    		Allows access to files in the Actuarial Science applications directory /group/actsciapp. *Restricted share.

    X:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\hank
    		Allows access to files in the hank directory /space/hank. *Restricted share.

    X:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\hankexp
    		Allows access to files in the hankexp directory /space/hankexp. *Restricted share.

    W:

    		 \\webedit.divms.uiowa.edu\homepage Allows access to the files for your website (if you have one).  Permissions on new files and directories are set so that the web server can read them.

    Y:

    		 \\netapp1.divms.uiowa.edu\yoyo
    		Allows access to files in /group/yoyo.

    *  CSG recommends using these drive letters ('H' for home directory and 'W' for website), but you can use any available drive letter instead.



     

  3. If you would like this drive to appear in "My Computer" the next time you login/reboot, make sure "Reconnect at logon" is checked.



     
  4. Click the "different user name" link.



     
  5. In the "Connect As..." dialog, enter "divms\<username>" (without quotes and replacing <username> with your Mathematical Sciences username) in the "User name" field.  Then enter your Mathematical Sciences password in the Password field and click "OK".



     
  6. Back in the "Map Network Drive" dialog, click Finish.




  7. If everything worked as expected, you will see an additional network drive in "My Computer".  Opening the drive will give you access to your files.
