Certification relating to computer science have always been valuable in the career field. Although they don't guarantee a full set of knowledge relating to how computer systems work, they help verify very specific skills to an employer. While a degree in computer science demonstrates a knowledge of the science as a whole, a certificate can be a great supplement to demonstrate a specific skillset, such as the knowledge of a programming language or knowledge of the basic administration of a specific operating system.

Certification provided by Sun Microsystems is an excellent way to grow your resume and build your skills at the same time. The Iowa open source university meetup has access to free web based training and discounts for Sun Certification that are only provided to students, in cooperation with the Sun Academic Initiative. Certificates can cover Java programming of various levels, and also Solaris administration.

More Certification

More certification can easily be found by developers who want access to something else. Certification from Microsoft, for example, can range from Exchange Server administration to SQL Server to Windows Server.
